MOSCOW, April 1, 2004. (RIA Novosti). An exhibition "Picasso Generation" opens in the Modern History Museum on Thursday.

This project includes 111 graphic works by 70 artists belonging to well-known German collector Meyer, deputy science director of the research institute of fine arts theory and history of the All-Russia Arts Academy Mikhail Busov told RIA Novosti.

The exposition features 40 engravings by Pablo Picasso, from illustrations to Balzac's "The Unknown Masterpiece" (1927) to works from the Artist and Model series (1960s). Russians will see most of Picasso's etchings, lithographs and linocuts for the first time.

The exposition is shaped like Picasso's conversation with his younger colleagues and students. Works by 69 modern painters, sculptors and graphic artists were created in Picasso's honor.

The first presentation of the unfinished project took place in Berlin in autumn 1973, after Picasso's death. However, the exposition lacked works by American masters. Its full version was later shown in Hanover, Vienna, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam and New York.

Sculptor Jacques Lipschitz was highly interested in Picasso's cubist works. Surrealists Joan Miro, Andre Masson, Wilfredo Lam and Roberto Matta were attracted by his surrealist works of the 1920s-1930s. Italian Renato Guttuso and French Edouard Pignon were inspired by their personal acquaintance with the artist and regarded him as their teacher.

European and American abstract artists Hans Hartung, Emil Schumacher, Robert Motherwell, Cy Twombly, members of the Cobra group and the new realism movement (France), leading representatives of the American and British pop art, actionists and minimalists also paid their tribute to the Spanish master.
