TBILISI, March 28, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Adzharian President Aslan Abashidze does not rule out the possibility that representatives of the ruling party will attempt to destabilize the situation in the autonomy. This statement was made before journalists on March 28th in Batumi (capital of Adzharia).

"The Georgian Parliamentary elections, which are also held in the autonomy of Adzharia, had no irregular deviations by 4 P.M. (local time). The situation is stable. Speaking about the possible tensions, I believe that the Nationals movement with its powerful lever in the face of "Kmara" (Enough!) youth movement, will attempt to destabilize the situation," Mr. Abashidze noted.

"We still don't know how they plan to do it, but we are certain that some kind of protest action will be conducted after the results of the elections. At the same time it doesn't matter to them what percent of votes they would receive and would certainly find grounds to protest, even if the Presidential political party Vozrozhdeniye (Revival) received only 1% of votes," Mr. Abashidze said.

According to the Adzharian leader, "a representative of the ruling party informed the Adzharian authorities that all possible levers would be pulled in order to destabilize the situation in the autonomy." "We must do everything possible to exclude the possibility for them to use such levers," Mr. Abashidze noted.

The Adzharian leader added that he had already informed the Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Plamen Nikolov on the developments.

Observers positively estimated all previous elections held in Adzharia, in which Georgia never interfered and which were held on accordance with the active on the autonomy's territory Constitution, Mr. Abashidze noted.
