RUSSIANS IN KOSOVO TO SEE WHAT REFUGEES NEED

BELGRADE, MARCH 25 (RIA Novosti corespondent Alexander Slabynko) - An ad hoc team of Russia's Ministry for Emergency and Calamity Relief arrived in Kosovo today to see what Serb refugees are in need of. Ethnic Albanian rioters ousted the unfortunates from their homes in last week's violent outbreaks.

Bishop Artemius received the team and spokesmen of Central Kosovo's relief HQ in Gracanice today.

Russian experts are in Kosovo to know a precise amount of aid, Sergei Kudinov, team leader, said at the conference. The team will also choose a site to assemble prefab houses coming from Russia quite soon, he added.

Two jumbo jets have brought a sizeable humanitarian cargo to Belgrade, and another four planes are expected within the next two days. A Serbia-bound lorry caravan is taking another charitable batch, of 380 tonnes.

"Has Russia ever abandoned Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija?" stressed Mr. Kudinov.

His team visited several refugee shelters, and saw a burnt down hospital and outpatient clinic in Kosovo Polje and houses reduced to ruins in Caglavica and Ljipljane.

"We have seen for ourselves that it was high time for Russia to offer aid and urgently bring it to the Serb victims." The refugees are putting up in appalling conditions, with no water and electricity, Sergei Kudinov said to Novosti.

Russia's prompt response is not only materially good but highly encouraging, said the bishop.
