MOSCOW, MARCH 25. (RIA Novosti). -- The UN Security Council is highly interested in the draft resolution on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, submitted by Moscow on March 24, Alexander Yakovenko, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told the Channel One television company.

In his words, the main goal pursued in the draft is the struggle against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery means. Yakovenko noted that the resolution targets the UN members' introduction of tough legislative measures to end the illegal traffic of weapons of mass destruction.

The official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry drew the attention to this project as "in no way undermining the existing contractual-law base in the field of non-proliferation, relying on the current national mechanisms of export control, and will not stand in the way of cooperation between the states in the scientific-technical sphere".

According to Alexander Yakovenko, France and Britain have already voiced readiness to be the co-authors of the project.

Expert work on the draft resolution within the framework of the entire United Nations Security Council will begin on March 25, Mr. Yakovenko noted.
