MOST RUSSIANS NEGATIVELY ASSESS US ACTION IN IRAQ

MOSCOW, March 24 (RIA Novosti's Nikolai Zherebtsov) - 62% of Russians negatively assess the US action in Iraq, regarding it as an aggression against the Iraqi people; 23% agree with the necessity to overthrow the Saddam Hussein dictatorship but believe that the methods to conduct warfare were inadequate; 4% fully agree with the US position in that conflict.

The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center, on the results of a representative all-Russian opinion poll conducted prior to the first anniversary since the beginning of the US operation in Iraq, provided these data. Respondents were questioned in 100 inhabited localities of Russia's 39 regions, territories and republics. 1,587 people were questioned at the place of their residence. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.

As for the results of the operation, most Russians believe its goals were not reached.

A year ago, many people thought the Americans would unconditionally win in Iraq. 45% of a similar poll's participants were of such an opinion in March 2003, against 21% in February 2004. 34% of respondents were of an opposite opinion a year ago, against 69% in February 2004.

In September 2003, most respondents said the main aim the US was pursuing in Iraq is the establishment of control over the world oil prices (52%), as well as over the Persian Gulf area (27%). 12% of respondents agreed then with the fact that Washington fights international terrorism in Iraq and 10% said it is looking for and trying to destroy weapons of mass destruction. 29% of the pollees accepted the US interpretation of the aim of intervention in Iraq - the protection of democratic values.
