TOKYO, March 23, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Andrei Fesyun) - Russian Ambassador to Japan Alexander Losyukov has described Russo-Japanese relations "stable and directed to the future". He said this at the 40th congress of the Society of Russo-Japanese relations held in the trade mission in Tokyo.

"Relations between Russia and Japan are far from those 30 or 40 years ago, and thus the Society's activities acquire a new meaning," Mr. Losyukov pointed out.

"The ideological and political confrontation that separated our countries is gone," he said. "Now we face a crucial task of developing economic and trade relations. With the trade development we could advance in solving different problems," the Ambassador believes.

According to him, such problems include the signing of a peace treaty. "It is a correct and fair approach to acknowledge that this problem exists and to look for its solution together," he said.

A solution can be found only after it is accepted by both Japanese and Russian people, Mr. Losyukov pointed out.
