FRENCH NATIONAL APPOINTED GEORGIA'S NEW FOREIGN MINISTER

TBILISI, March 20, 2004. (RIA Novosti). -Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia, the Ambassador of France to Georgia in 2003-2004, has been appointed new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili signed a decree on her appointment on Saturday.

His other decree grants Ms Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia dual citizenship, the press-service of the Georgian President reports.

According to the current Constitution of Georgia, a Georgian citizen cannot be simultaneously a citizen of a foreign state. Only President of Georgia is authorized by the Constitution to grant dual citizenship to individuals.

Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia has become the first ever Georgian citizen holding dual citizenship.

"It was my dream to appoint Ms Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia to the post of Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She embodies the European diplomacy, and Georgia, as is well known, is seeking to join the European Union," Mikhail Saakashvili said at the ceremony of signing the decree on appointment of the new Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit to France on 11 March, Georgian President discussed the issue of granting Ms Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia dual citizenship and her subsequent appointment to the post of Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs with French President Jacque Chirac.

Ms Salome Zurabashvili-Kashia is a daughter of Georgian emigrants of the first wave. She was born in Paris in 1952. She has an impressive 30-year track record as a career diplomat with posts in the UN, NATO and the European Union.
