ISLAMABAD, March 20, 2004. (RIA Novosti). The first lot of tangerines (20 containers) was delivered to Russia from Pakistan, the APP state agency said.

According to Shamin Siddik, a head of the Pakistani department of agriculture development and exports, 100 containers will be delivered in April and next year this number will amount to 1,000.

Russia can become one of major importers of Pakistan's tangerines, Mr. Siddik said.

Russia annually imports citrus fruit for the sum of $250 million. Morocco, Israel, Spain and Egypt are main suppliers of citrus fruit.

A lot of citrus fruit are grown in Pakistan, especially, in Punjab Province. Only 7 per cent of tangerines are exported to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. Genuine connoisseurs prefer Pakistani tangerines to others.

Now Pakistan sees the peak of the citrus gathering and exporting season.
