SECURITY COMMITTEE AGAINST LIMITING INFORMATION ON TERRORIST ATTACKS

MOSCOW, March 18, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - The State Duma Security Committee recommended that the State Duma reject the amendment to the draft law "On Mass Media" that limits information on terrorist attacks in the media.

Mikhail Yurevich, author of the amendment suggested that law enforcement bodies approve all material concerning the consequences of a terrorist attack in the media.

Members of the Security Committee maintain that the law "On Mass Media" prohibits the use of the media to commit a crime, achieve an extremist goal or spread violence and cruelty.

At the same time, the Security Committee said that adoption of such an amendment will include a limit on information about any accidents, which will groundlessly restricts citizens' right to receive information and create favorable conditions for illegal limitation of journalists' professional activities.

The deputies also noted that in accordance with the law "On the Fight Against Terrorism," during a counter terrorist operation people should be informed about the actions of terrorist in line with the resolutions of the operation staff.
