MOSCOW, March 16, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Rescuers have extracted fourteen bodies from under the debris of an apartment building in Arkhangelsk (a regional centre in the north-western federal district), Deputy Chief of the Information Department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry Viktor Beltsov told RIA Novosti.

"According to specified reports, the incident killed 24 people. At present, 16 people, including two children, are staying in seven hospitals of the city. Seven are in a grave condition, and the others received first aid on the spot," said Mr. Beltsov.

In his words, another 60 people might be buried under the rubble.

An explosion ripped through an apartment building at about 3 am Moscow time last night. As a result, an entrance to the house caved in. Presumably, the tragedy was caused by a gas explosion. A total of 73 people lived in this part of the building.
