COLLAPSE OF APARTMENT BLOCK IN ARKHANGELSK KILLS THREE PEOPLE

ST. PETERSBURG, March 16, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- A representative of the press service of the North-Western regional centre of Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry (MChS) said that three people were killed and ten were injured as a result of the collapse of a section of an apartment building in Arkhangelsk (a Regional centre in the Russian Federation's North-Western federal district).

According to him, more than 70 people may still remain under the shambles.

Several versions of the accident are being considered now, with an explosion of communal gas being the principal of them.

A team of rescue workers, including dog handlers, is preparing to fly from St. Petersburg to Arkhangelsk.

The report about the collapse of the fifth section of a nine-storey six-section panel dwelling house in the Cosmonauts Street in Arkhangelsk came at 3.25 A.M. Moscow time.

All operational services of the city are working at the scene of the accident. (ark/yon)
