TBILISI, MARCH 16 (RIA NOVOSTI) - In the Georgian Foreign Ministry on Monday, a meeting was held between deputy Foreign Minister Merab Antadze and Russian ambassador in Tbilisi Vladimir Chkhikvishvili. They discussed the situation in Adzharia (Georgia's autonomy).

The Novosti-Georgia news agency learnt from the Georgian foreign policy establishment that Antadze familiarized the Russian ambassador with measures directed towards stabilization in Adzharia within the framework of the constitution and legislation of Georgia.

"The efforts of the Georgian authorities are aimed at the protection of the human rights, promotion of the process of democratization and the ensuring of democratic elections in Adzharia. Against this background, the estimates fixed in the recent declarations of the Russian Foreign Ministry on the Adzharian issue cause extreme concern," the spokesman for the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

During this meeting, the hope was expressed that, against the background of mutual understanding reached during the Moscow visit by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, such declarations cannot produce a negative effect.

On behalf of the Georgian side, Merab Antadze expressed readiness to hold consultations soon in connection with the preparation of a framework friendship and cooperation agreement between Georgia and Russia.

In turn, Vladimir Chkhikvishvili officially confirmed that on the Russian military base near Batumi there were no movements or withdrawal of military equipment. The ambassador confirmed the readiness of the Russian side for the continuation in the near future of consultations between the two foreign ministries on the entire range of questions.
