MANEGE ON FIRE CLOSE TO KREMLIN

MOSCOW, MARCH 14, RIA NOVOSTI - The Manege, or Central Exposition Hall, close to the Kremlin, is on fire. The giant building is barely discernible, blanketed in black smoke. An occasional tongue of flame is the only thing one can see shooting above the roof, our correspondent reports from the site.

The huge 19th century edifice, 300 metres to 15, is consumed by fire almost entirely. The conflagration has spread at more than 2,000 square metres sideways and down from the roof centre, where it started. The disaster was qualified as Category Five-supreme danger-as soon as a first alarm call came, at about 9 p.m., Moscow time, say firemen and police.
