MOSCOW, MARCH 12 (RIA NOVOSTI) - Gennady Fadeyev, director of the Russian Railways company, and Iran's ambassador Golam Reza Shafei met Friday in Moscow to discuss prospects for resuming direct railway communication between the two countries across Azerbaijan, reports the company press service.

"Railways were once the basic transport arteries between our countries and the time is high to revive their role and significance in stepping up mutual trade and as a powerful transit corridor," said Fadeyev.

He reported that a railway terminal in the port of Olya (close to the city of Astrakhan on the Caspian sea coast) will be commissioned early this August. Once this strip of the railway has been put in operation, ferry communication between Russia and Iranian ports on the Caspian coast will become possible, he said.

The meeting discussed a wide range of questions of mutually advantageous cooperation and prospects for joint work in the future.
