MOSCOW, MARCH 12-RIA NOVOSTI - An away session of the world St.Petersburg club was held this Friday at the Moscow house of nationalities to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947, who lived in India from 1920s), the great Russian painter, theatre artist, archeologist, writer and cultural wealth champion.

On display were paintings, drawings, sculpture, restoration pieces and designs by students of the Nicholas Roerich art school, one of the oldest institutions of this kind in Russia, demonstrating the continuity of the St.Petersburg art tradition.

The world St.Petersburg club, which was founded on January 7, 1991, is now led by the Hermitage director Mikhail Piotrovsky.

In order to say that you belong in St.Petersburg, you do not necessarily require to be born in the Northern capital (as the Russians now call the former capital of the Russian empire). "St.Petersburg is a wide notion, standing for a hospitable city with multi-ethnic traditions," said Piotrovsky. "The club is open to all who take interest in St.Pete." This club born as a joke by guitarists has grown into a highlight of public life.

The session signed a programme of the Club's joint action with the Moscow house of nationalities, both cities being confronted with the same problems plaguing multi-ethnic megapolices, said Tatiana Mazilova, chief of the Moscow Nationalities House's ethnic cultures board. Among joint projects with the Club are those entitled "artistic heritage", "EthnoArt", "the household culture of peoples in pre-revolution Russia" and "artistic testing grounds for music and light" which are to come up with quite a number of works by modern artists and poorly-known archives.
