MOSCOW, March 11, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - The chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (upper house of Russian parliament), Mikhail Margelov, condemned the terrorist attacks that killed more than 100 people and wounded hundreds of others in Madrid today.

In an interview with RIA Novosti on Thursday, Mr. Margelov noted that terrorism today "does not know geographical, ethnic or religious borders anymore."

"Muslims are affected by Muslim terrorists," Mr. Margelov continued, "just as Christians are by fellow Christians." Terrorism has become a global disease. Regions and countries are not affected by it separately, all of the civilized world is, without exception. Russia has recently survived horrific terrorist attacks similar to those that took place today in Madrid and understands Spain's pain and horror."

As he said that terrorism could not be justified by anything and that any act of violence that results in innocent deaths should be punished in appropriate way.

"Only when every country in the world understands that bombings in the Chechnya, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris and Baghdad are not different and that they are crimes against humanity, can we have a united fight against terrorism," Mr. Margelov emphasized. Terrorism is a global problem. Citizens of the world die in terrorist attacks. It is necessary to combat this problem together."

He expressed sympathy for the friends and families of the victims of the bombings in Madrid today.
