NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO BE PUT INTO OPERATION IN MOSCOW

MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) - The Vnukovo new air terminal will be put into operation by the middle of 2004 in Moscow. It is being built on the site of the old airport with the same name 30 kilometers to the southwest of Moscow.

The building with an area of 24,000 square meters will service up to 6 million passengers of international flights. Upon its construction, reconstruction of the existing air terminal the area of 180,000 sq m will start.

The project costs about 500 million dollars. Another 120-130 million dollars will be spent on the airport's modernization. The International Airport Vnukovo joint stock company plans to extend the main landing strip up to 3,800 meters and to build 24 planesides for wide-body aircraft. A three-star hotel will be built by the airport. A light rail line will link the airport with Moscow City international business center.

Vnukovo is the oldest of the four Moscow airports. It was built 62 years ago. It underwent its last reconstruction before the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.
