RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY HAILS LOUISE ARBOUR APPOINTMENT AS UN SUPREME HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER

MOSCOW, MARCH 1. /RIA NOVOSTI / -- The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes the appointment of Louise Arbour as the United Nations Supreme Human Rights Commissioner, the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry says in the official communique.

"The Russian Federation hopes that the activities of Arbour in this responsible post will be aimed at the assertion of the human rights as the uniting, not separating factor", reads the Foreign Ministry communique.

"Russia is ready to give the Supreme Commissioner all-round support in increasing the efficiency of the United Nations' human-rights sector", reads the communique.

Arbour was appointed as the UN Supreme Human Rights Commissioner on February 25 by the UN General Assembly.

Earlier, Arbour held the post of the main prosecutor of The Hague International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Arbour is an expert in international law.
