CHECHEN FIELD COMMANDER RUSLAN GELAYEV KILLED IN DAGHESTAN MOUNTAINS

MAKHACHKALA, March 1, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- Chechen field commander Ruslan Gelayev was killed in the mountains of Daghestan (a republic of the Russian Federation in the North Caucasus, bordering on Chechnya). The Makhachkala Territorial Department of the North Caucasian Regional Frontier Department of the Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed this information to RIA Novosti.

"Gelayev was killed on Saturday by a frontier detail in the mountains of Daghestan on the Avaro-Kakhetian road, which leads to Georgia," the department spokesman said.

The FSB department for the Republic of Daghestan confirmed this fact to RIA Novosti.

According to the information received by RIA Novosti from the sources in the frontier service, Gelayev was killed by a frontier detail consisting of two soldiers.

In this battle the frontier guards also died, the sources said.
