ISRAEL SUSPENDS CONSTRUCTION OF WALL IN NORTHERN JERUSALEM

TEL AVIV, February 29, 2004 (RIA Novosti corr. Ratmir Orestov) - Israel's High Court of Justice has ruled to suspend the construction of a demarcation wall in northern Jerusalem. Construction will not resume until the court adopts a final decision on complaints from locals.

The inhabitants of a nearby Israeli village joined eight Arab villages protesting against the damage the wall will inflict on them when constructed.

Palestinians say the demarcation wall actually encircles them, cutting off the farmland and jobs in Ramallah.

Israeli protesters, for their part, insist the wall will fuel Arabs' hatred for Israel and trigger an outbreak of violence. They say the most appropriate place for the wall is along the 1967 demarcation line.

Moreover, the Israeli government worked out a plan, which is yet to be approved, to cut the length of the wall by eliminating the "intrusions" into Palestinian lands. The High Court of Justice believes the section in northern Jerusalem falls within the definition and can be removed from the initial project.
