IN TEHERAN WREATHS WERE LAID TO TOMBS OF RUSSIAN SERVICEMEN WHO DIED DURING THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR

TEHERAN, February 23, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Nikolai Terekhov) -- On Monday in the Iranian capital an official ceremony of laying wreaths to tombs of Soviet servicemen, who died during the Great Patriotic War, took place.

According to the RIA Novosti correspondent, live flowers and wreaths were laid in the country residence of the Russian embassy in Teheran (Zargande) where an obelisk was erected in honor of Soviet soldiers, who died on the territory of Iran, as well as in the Russian cemetery.

Embassy officials and representatives of other Russian missions in Iran attended the ceremony.

Despite the fact that there were no combat actions on the territory of Iran people were dying from diseases and accidents.

During the war Soviet servicemen were stationed on the territory of Iran to ensure transportation of military and technical cargo shipments from ports of the Persian Gulf across the Iranian territory to the USSR.
