MOSCOW, February 15, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Alexandra Chebanu) -- The congress of the Party of Russian Regions has opened in the Moscow region.

Speaking at the congress, co-chairman of the Rodina bloc and the Party of Russian Regions Sergei Glazyev urged the audience to support the initiative of the Party of National Revival "People's Will" about creation of a single political party based on the Rodina bloc. [The bloc was urgently set up especially for the December 7th parliamentary elections and thanks to its aggressive pseudo-patriotic campaign rhetoric managed to receive 9 percent of votes and got seats in the State Duma.] However, the other chairman, Dmitry Rogozin did not support the proposal.

Rogozin believes that Rodina's parliamentary faction, as well as the bloc of the same name can become "a staff reserve for President Putin".

"We should work in this direction instead of running in the presidential elections," he said alluding to Glazyev's presidential ambitions.

The congress' delegates will decide the bloc's fate and its participation in the election campaign.
