SAAKASHVILI: ISSUE OF RUSSIAN MILITARY BASES MUST NOT DETERMINE RUSSO-GEORGIAN RELATIONS

MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) - The issue of Russian military bases must not be crucial in Russian-Georgian relations, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"The issue must not be regarded as determining our relations. It should be decided separately. We must not overshadow our relations," the Georgian president said.

The issue has been settled within the framework of the Istanbul agreements, and the decision is irrevocable," the top official underlined.

While speaking about cooperation between the two country's departments, Mikhail Saakashvili promoted interaction not only between frontier services, but defense ministries as well.

Wednesday's meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov resulted in a resolution to train Georgian officers in Russian military institutes. "Next week you will receive the list of the first group of officers to study in Russia," Saakashvili said.

Besides, secret services of the two states will develop mutual exchanges of information, first of all in anti-terrorist operations, he added.
