MOSCOW, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - From February 9 to 11 the Russian Customs Academy hosts a seminar to assess the risks and fight the smuggling of narcotics in Russia, reads a statement of the State Customs Committee (GTK) press-release received by RIA Novosti.

The seminar is held on the basis of the Regional Center of the World Customs Organization, whose founding agreement was signed by the WCO and Russia's GTK in November 2002.

Law enforcement officers of customs services of the EURASEC countries (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan), including the anti-drug service of the Main Department on the Fight against Smuggling under the Russian GTK, and WCO experts will be trained, says the statement.

Illegal drug trafficking is a threat to all countries, the international security and is the main source of financial support of international terrorism. We confirm in practice our adherence to enhancing cooperation in the fight against this threat, Igor Mezhakov, deputy chairman of the GRK said at the opening of the seminar.

WCO secretary general Michel Danet's welcoming message was read out at the seminar.

"The urgency of the seminar topic is conditioned by unending attempts by international organized terrorist groups to use our country's territory to transfer smuggled drugs from Central Asia to European and American countries," says the press release.
