Commenting for RIA Novosti on a Supreme Court ruling which endorsed the decision of the central election commission of Russia to deny Viktor Gerashchenko registration as a presidential candidate, Glazyev said: "We anticipated such a development." "We decided still earlier that if Gerashchenko were denied registration as a presidential candidate, I would be nominated from a group of voters with support from the Homeland bloc," he said.
On January 22, the central election commission denied registration without signatures list to Viktor Gerashchenko since he was nominated not from the Rodina (Homeland) bloc but from one of its constituent parties, which, in the opinion of the commission, demands that Gerashchenko collect 2 million signatures of voters in his support. Under Russian law, signature collection is not required only from candidates who are nominated by parties and blocs represented in the Duma. But Gerashchenko said he would not engage in any signature collection campaign.
As to Glazyev, he is running as an independent candidate though he had every reason to succeed by following an easier path as a candidate from his bloc.
"I was compelled to tread the most difficult road of being nominated from a group of voters and collecting 2 million signatures in my support," he said.
Glazyev also expressed the hope that he would be registered in the central election commission of Russia as an official presidential candidate.
