ALIEV CALLS UPON RUSSIAN, AZERI MPs TO FIGHT TERRORISM

MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 6 (RIA Novosti) - Azeri President Ilkham Aliev has called upon MPs to make a weighty contribution to the battle against terrorism.

Following his meeting with Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov, Aliev told newsmen that the Russian and Azeri leadership shared the stand that international terrorism could be uprooted only through joint efforts.

In the opinion of the Azeri president, parliaments being the key bodies of state power, could do a lot both by adopting relevant laws and establishing a judicial basis as well as by participating in international conferences.

"It will help bring home to the world public the main thought that only acting in unison, through joint efforts, can the world community do away with this evil, international terrorism," said Aliev.

For his part, Boris Gryzlov noted that the two countries would benefit by a concerted position on this score to be upheld on the world scene. He cited the experience at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe where the Russian and Azeri envoys, who pursued the same position, were successful in promoting various positions.

Besides, Gryzlov believes that it is very important to have harmonized legislation, especially, in matters concerning terrorism.

He noted that the parliaments had a capacity for comforting the laws of the two countries to each other. "We shall be able then to talk about a certain variant of model law," concluded the Speaker.
