MOSCOW METRO BLAST: BRITISH EXPERT SEES MUSLIM CONNECTION

LONDON, FEBRUARY 6, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Alexander Smotrov) - This morning's appalling blast in the Moscow metro can be tracked down to Chechen separatists' Muslim terrorist sympathizers, holds David Benn, prominent British expert on Russia.

Indicatively, Moscow officially accused Chechen militants of all recent terror acts, with token exceptions. Rebels denied their involvement every time, he pointed out to Sky News television.

If Chechens are not to blame, it will be hard to get on the track of real culprits of today's and preceding instances, remarked Mr. Benn.

He thinks the blast was part of international terrorist activities. Many Muslim fundamentalists-some of the Al Qaida, too-sided with Chechnya on its independence cause, and fought on the separatist side. They are likely now to be reminding to Moscow that Chechen resistance goes on, assumes David Benn.
