RUSSIA: SECRET SERVICE CONFISCATES MONTHLY ISSUE

MOSCOW, JANUARY 29 (RIA NOVOSTI) - The Federal Security Service, or FSB, seized an issue of the Versia monthly newspaper on the editorial premises today. Issue 33, for September 2003, was confiscated because of a contribution that interested investigators, a service PR officer said to Novosti.

The confiscation complied with the Criminal Procedural Code as the FSB investigation board has launched criminal proceedings on a state secret revealed. Our informant did not specify the suspects.

Titled "On the Bottom", the controversial contribution concerned special-mission submarines. Vadim Saranov, the author, denies dealing with state secrets. Whatever information he was proceeding from had appeared in non-classified sources, he reassures.
