The project, GLORIAD, is designed to develop science and education. "In the near future the world's science will develp in a different way," the scientist claimed.
He stressed that there is a need for more powerful computers and faster webs to cope with inevitably growing amounts of information.
"The fate of Russian science depends speedy Internet access. Today we need to achieve the speed of 10 megabytes per second," the academician said. As experience demonstrates, information is delivered at a speed 1000 times higher than it was 10 years ago, he pointed out.
The amounts of information processed in such spheres as high-energy physics, astronomy and others come to trillions of bits, which makes great demand for high-speed networks as well as supercomputers, the scientist said.
On the Russian part the project is promoted by the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information, the Rostelecom company and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The initiative to implement this global project is very important for Russian science and education, Yury Osipov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, underlined. According to him, access to the latest information technologies will step up global cooperation, which will thwart brain drain from Russia and attract foreign partners to work with Russian scientists.
