MOSCOW, JANUARY 26, RIA NOVOSTI - Certain Russian-based media outlets had been forecasting a stormy atmosphere at negotiations Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, had in Moscow today. They were wrong-the negotiators were full of mutual well-wishing, and frank and outspoken even as they debated the most ticklish matters, Igor Ivanov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, said to newsmen after President Vladimir Putin and Mr. Powell finished conference. "That spirit was fully in keeping with our [Russian-US] relations," added the minister.

The visitor, too, made it a point to dispel apprehensions on the talks. He described his Moscow contacts as "very good and all-embracing", adding that his description concerned talks with Vladimir Putin and Igor Ivanov alike.

As Mr. Ivanov said to the media, the agenda concerned Mideastern developments, the situation around Iraq, progress in nuclear issues-in particular, in the Korean context, Moldovan settlement, and Russia-NATO partnership. The negotiators discussed all those issues in great detail.

Reciprocal efforts brought spectacular progress in every field of Russo-US relations, which rest on a basis firm enough to overcome together all differences that have arisen or may yet arise on certain matters, said Igor Ivanov, and stressed that his point found ample proof in current practice.
