IGOR IVANOV MEETS WITH AMBASSADORS OF CENTRAL AND EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

MOSCOW, JANUARY 20. /RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT DMITRI PANOVKIN/ -- A conventional meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and the ambassadors of Central and East European countries accredited in the Russian Federation has been held in Moscow on Tuesday.

The Press and Information Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry reports: "participants in the meeting have thoroughly discussed topical questions of regional and European policy, problems of relations between Russia and these states in the contest of the upcoming expansion of the European Union, priority directions of the active build-up of mutually advantageous and constructive partnership in the UN and other international organisations".

The Russian Foreign Ministry's communique notes that in the course of the talks due attention was paid to "the development ways to increase the efficiency of the joint efforts in opposing new threats and challenges, formation of a highly efficient system of European and regional security".

In addition, a range of specific aspects of interaction in the political, trade-economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres was in discussion.
