RUSSIA AND CHINA FOR COMPREHENSIVE CONVENTION AGAINST INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM

MOSCOW, January 15, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - The fourth sitting of the Russian-Chinese working group on the struggle against international terrorism was held in Moscow. The Russian delegation was led by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Anatoli Safonov. The Chinese delegation was headed by a Chinese deputy foreign minister.

"The sides have had a detailed exchange of opinions on a wide range of global and regional problems of the struggle against terrorism, including terrorist threats in Iraq and Afghanistan, Central and South-East Asia," the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry said to RIA Novosti.

Issues concerning antiterrorist cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and start of practical work of its regional antiterrorist structure were in focus.

The sides have again declared that Chechen and "East Turkestan" terrorists and separatists are part of international terrorists, voiced readiness to support each other in the struggle against terrorism.

Participants in the sitting noted the coordinating role of the United Nations and its Security Council in the international effort against terrorism.

Moscow and Beijing have spoken up for the earliest completion of the United Nations' work on the drafts of the International Convention on the Struggle against Acts of Nuclear Terrorism and the Comprehensive Convention on the Struggle against International Terrorism.

A regular sitting of the working group will be held in the second half of the year in Beijing.
