TBILISI, January 12, 2003. (RIA Novosti) - None but Georgian troops will be stationed in Georgia from now on, Mikhail Saakashvili, president elect, said to a news conference at the Krtsanisi governmental residence.

"There will be none but Georgian soldiers in Georgia. Georgian troops alone will protect their land," he emphasized.

"As for Russian military bases [to be withdrawn], we shall take a human stance on the issue. We shall not humiliate officers and men stationed there, and we shall come at a mutually acceptable settlement in compliance with acting agreements," reassured Mr Saakashvili.

"Georgia does not mean to revise available agreements. It is a sovereign country that has the utmost respect for Russia as a state, which has its interests in this area." "There are, however, international pledges to reckon with, and we are willing to arrive at a human solution [of the issue] in compliance with them - just as was the case with border guards and on all the other issues." "We shall together find the money to finance quicker Russian pullout from Georgia," said the president elect.
