INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OPENS IN PETERSBURG

ST PETERSBURG, January 11 (RIA Novosti-Northwest corr. Anna Novak) - The eighth international festival "Christmas Get-Togethers in Northern Palmira" opens in St Petersburg on Sunday.

The All-Russian public organization "Union of Russian concert figures" said the festival will make it possible for St Petersburg music lovers to hear musicians from different regions of Russia. Musicians from over 40 Russian cities and 27 other countries have taken part in the Christmas Get-Togethers for the years of their holding.

This year, orchestras, choruses instrumentalists and vocalists from different Russian cities - Petersburg, Moscow, Veliky Novgorod, Orenburg, Murmansk, Tver, Nizhny Novgorod, as well as performers from Germany will participate in the festival.

The festival program includes performances of a violin ensemble from Yakutia, a chamber orchestra from Orenburg, soloists of the Young Opera Singers' Academy of the Mariinsky Theater (Petersburg) and the Nizhny Novgorod chamber choir.

The concerts will take place in the best music halls of the Northern capital.

Well-known conductor Yuri Temirkanov is the constant music director of the festival.
