UNREST IN CHECHNYA CONTINUES

GROZNY, January 10th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - A shootout in Chechnya's Vedeno district has left a marine dead and another one wounded, according to the joint group of federal forces in the North Caucasus.

According to the source, the shootout took place on Friday morning near the Dyshne-Vedeno settlement. Unidentified bandits with submachine guns ambushed a marine brigade conducting reconnaissance near the settlement.

Meanwhile, a terrorist act has been averted in Urus-Martan. "A police search discovered an explosive device planted on the road between the local kindergarten and the district hospital," a spokesman for the Chechen interior ministry Ruslan Atsayev said on the phone.

The explosive device was a metal ball filled with grey powder and metal bolts.

"The explosive device was based on the Kenwood radio station. It contained 500 g of TNT," added the source.

The explosive has been defused. The police are hunting people involved in this terrorist attempt.
