ASTANA, JANUARY 9, RIA NOVOSTI - Russia and Kazakhstan will drill ever more petroleum and natural gas as world demand for energy is increasing, President Vladimir Putin of Russia said to the media after summitry with Nursultan Nazarbayev, his Kazakh counterpart, in Astana, Kazakh capital.

"Russia and Kazakhstan both have an opportunity to enhance production, and we shall do so-we are aware of our potential, our benefit, and our responsibilities.

"We shall make it a point to arrange our policies in such a way as to prevent world market fever, and to give the global economy its chance of rhythmic development based on smooth [oil and gas] supplies from our area," he reassuringly remarked.

As for petroleum transportation, "both Moscow and Astana are racking their brains how to meet the challenge. We have a sufficient amount of related blueprints," said Mr. Putin.

He intends to discuss prospects for a northern, Baltic petroleum route, and another, via Murmansk, with President Nazarbayev, as they come together again tomorrow, he added.

Caspian partnership with Kazakhstan satisfies Russia. Today, both countries' companies signed yet another document on Caspian-based teamwork. "That is another step forward to partnership in the area." Russia looks forward to Kazakhstan streamlining its production-sharing legislation. "On the whole, we are satisfied with the job and its pace," said President Putin.
