DEPUTY KOKOSHIN: GEORGIAN-ABKHAZIAN CONFLICT CANNOT BE RESOLVED WITHOUT RUSSIA'S ASSISTANCE

MOSCOW, January 8, 2004. /RIA Novosti correspondent Polina Kalabukhova/ -- The conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia (Georgian self-proclaimed republic bordering on Russia) can not be resolved without Russia's assistance, Russian Academy of Sciences corresponding member, State Duma (Parliament's lower chamber) Deputy Andrey Kokoshin disclosed on air of Ekho Moskvy radio station.

According to him, "the previous Georgian authorities made a mistake, relying too much on the Western countries in the solution of this issue." Russia with all its current problems is a great power, which will be always interested in the Caucasus and those, dealing with the issue of the situation stabilization in Georgia, must understand it," he added.

Speaking about the relations of the new Georgian authorities with Russia, the Deputy noted that it would be hard to predict them. He expressed hope that "the success of the new authorities will not make them giddy, since the situation in the country is very complicated." "Russia is not interested in Georgia being the center of instability and the place for the further collapse of the governmental and social tissue," Kokoshin noted. "Russia is interested in Georgia taking into account Russia's strategic interests in the region and being Russia's full-fledged strategic partner," he added.
