PERFORMANCE OF MARIINSKY THEATER ARTISTS TO BE IN CENTER OF MUSIC FESTIVAL ON CANARY ISLANDS

MADRID, January 8, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Huan Kobo) - One of the main events of the XX Music Festival, which opened on Wednesday on Canary Islands, will be the performance of the Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theater artists under the guidance of Valery Gergiyev, El Pais newspaper reads.

According to the newspaper, due to the participation in the festival Valery Gergiyev postponed for the time being his work on the tetralogy by German composer Richard Wagner "Der Ring des Nibelungen".

The Russian artists will perform in the Alfred Claus Music Hall, Las Palmas and in the philharmonic hall in the city of Tenerife. Gergiyev will be conducting Musorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov". Moreover, the Russian artists will perform Sergey Prokofyev's three musical compositions - cantata "Alexander Nevsky", "Classical Symphony" and Concert for the violin with orchestra.

Leading Spanish musicians as well as famous music groups, such as Stuttgart Opera and symphonic orchestras from Prague, the Hague and Helsinki will participate in the Music Festival on Canary Islands.

The Music Festival on Canary Islands will be closed on February 15th.
