SAAKASHVILI'S VICTORY AT GEORGIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IS CERTAIN

TBILISI, January 6, 2004. /RIA Novosti correspondent Melsida Akopyan/ -- According to the Georgian Central Elections Committee, by 2 p.m. Moscow time it processed 910,709 ballot papers from 1,237 stations. Candidate from the National Movement Mikhail Saakashvili with 96.54 percent of votes remains the leader, the Commission's head Zurab Chiaberashvili reported at a press conference in Tbilisi.

"By now we have processed data from over 43 percent of election polls," he said.

According to preliminary results, former governor of Imeretia (a region in Western Georgia with the capital in Kutaisi) Teimuraz Shashiashvili received 1.26 percent of votes, the sum of votes gained by all other candidates for president is a little over 0.5 percent, while 0.19 per cent of voters voted against all candidates.

The elections were held at 2,850 polls in Georgia and abroad, where on the day of elections Georgian consulates and official missions organized 26 election polls. Chiaberashvili promised to sum up total preliminary results and to name percentage of votes received by candidates by the noon of January 7th.
