MOSCOW, January 5th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - Russia's economically active population makes 50% of the total population, according to the Russian State Statistics Committee. 65.2 million people are involved in the economy and 6.2 million (8.6% of the economically active population) were unemployed but were looking for a job. In accordance with the norms of the International Labour Organisation, the latter are qualified as unemployed.

According to the committee, in November 2003 job centres found jobs for 100,000 people, which is 4.5% less than in November 2002. This is due to a decrease in the number of jobs in many areas of the Russian economy. The sharpest decline was registered in the forest, woodworking, coal and chemical sectors. At the same time, the number of jobs is further increasing in the social, financial, credit and insurance sectors.
