After Russian president Vladimir Putin touched upon the issues of the Syrian crisis, the International Olympic Committee, the Ukrainian crisis and the 2018 FIFA World Cup during his speech at the Valdai Discussion Club meeting, the Kremlin has provided some further details on those topics.

MOSCOW (Sputnik)  Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on when and how a congress of Syrian peoples may be formed, said that "it is too early to talk about this," adding that the president's initiative "was being actively discussed."

Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that there was an idea to create a congress of peoples in Syria. He stressed that its establishment could be an important step towards a political settlement in the country.

According to the Russian president, this could be an important step towards the creation of a new constitution for the country.

Russia-Ukraine Border

Speaking about Moscow's fears of tragic developments in the unrecognized republics in the east of Ukraine, Peskov said that "armed forces of Ukraine may follow the observers" if the latter are deployed on Russia's border.

"They may be followed not only by them, but also by detachments of extremists well known for their inhuman actions, and nobody will be safeguarded from new tragic events."

Peskov agreed that independent control could save the Russian Federation from accusations that it is an aggressor country, but added that the interests of the inhabitants of the Donbass provide an even greater justification.

Putin's 'Hint' About the US and Olympic Games

"The president did not hint. The president openly said we have relevant information that testifies to that," Peskov pointed out reporters when asked about the speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the latter, according to a reporter, 'hinted' that certain US organizations were trying to influence the IOC to ban Russia from the Olympics.

"State [organizations], including by means of public, nongovernmental organizations," he said in response to a relevant question without elaborating.

2018 FIFA World Cup

Former FIFA President Joseph Blatter and ex-UEFA chief Michel Platini “will be welcomed here as well as the old friends. You know that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has long-standing and even friendly relations with Blatter and he is very well-acquainted with Platini, which is why, they will be welcomed in Moscow," Peskov said.

Blatter left office in 2015 after a corruption scandal. In December of the same year, he was suspended from football activities for eight years. In February 2016, the appeal committee of FIFA reduced the period of disqualification to six years.
