MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) called for support of farmers of South Madagascar in order to prevent the region from starvation, the WFP said in a statement on Friday.
"Farmers in southern Madagascar, hit by three years of devastating drought, urgently need more support so they can plant crops in time for the December and January planting seasons," the statement said.
The statement added that the UN food agencies estimate the need in aid and support at some $67 million.
According to the WFP, about 850,000 people are facing hunger in the affected areas of the island at the moment, while some 1.4 million are expected to be "food insecure" during the next year in Madagascar's southern regions.
