MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Hawaii-based center will alert IAEA to floods, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, fires, tropical storms and severe meteorological hazards.
"Even the best designed and operated facility could be affected by the forces of nature…This makes timely and accurate notifications of external hazards crucial," IAEA chief on nuclear installation safety Greg Rzentkowski said.
The IAEA has been using a warning system since 2010 that compares earthquake intensity with intensities used in the design of nuclear power plants in the affected area. This helps the agency to prepare for and respond to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies.
