MOSCOW (Sputnik) China has sent a police liaison and a number of officers to Rio de Janeiro to assist local law enforcement in safeguarding Chinese citizens during the Olympic Games, local media reported.

"At the request of the Brazilian police, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security has decided to send a liaison officer to Rio. We've also sent officers to the intelligence center to help fight terrorism and ensure the security of Chinese citizens during the Olympic Games. The move is also intended to better deal with crimes against Chinese citizens," Shao Weimin, the liaison officer sent to Brazil was quoted as saying by China's CNC broadcaster on Wednesday.

The media outlet added, citing the liaison officer, that Brazilian police have set up joint operation centers with China in Rio and the capital Brasilia to boost threat assessments and intelligence sharing.

In July, the deputy chief of the nation’s sports administration, Cai Zhenhua, said that China was sending its largest team ever of 416 athletes to the Rio Olympics.

The 2016 Summer Olympics, the first ever to be held in South America, are set to open in the Brazilian coastal city of Rio de Janeiro on Friday, August 5, and last until August 21.
