A court in Okinawa sentenced a US sailor to 2.5 years in prison for raping an unconscious woman, in a case that sparked protests against US military presence on the island, Japanese media said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Prosecutors demanded sentencing Justin Castellanos, 24, to four years in jail for what they said was an "absolutely despicable" act, Japanese news agency Kyodo reported.

The ruling by a three-judge panel said that the Navy sailor found an intoxicated tourist asleep in the hallway next to his hotel room in southern Japan’s Naha in March 2016. He took the woman to his room and sexually assaulted her.

The seaman was serving at the US Marine Camp Schwab in the northern part of the island, which has a population of about a million.

Okinawa is home to a large US military force. There have been mass protests in recent years against US military presence amid reports of rape and murder by US personnel on the locals. Okinawa authorities repeatedly demanded that the US base be evicted.
