BAKU (Sputnik) – The first freight train from India to Russia will make its journey in August, passing through the territory of Azerbaijan, head of Azerbaijan Railways Javid Gurbanov said on Thursday.
"The first freight train from India to Russia through the territory of Azerbaijan will be launched in late August 2016 in the framework of the North-South project," Gurbanov told reporters.
The Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway is part of the international North-South Transport Corridor project, signed by Russia, Iran and India in 2002. The project aims to reduce the costs and the time of ship, rail and road deliveries to and from Russia, India, Iran, Azerbaijan and other countries located along the route, as well as to increase connectivity between the major cities on the way.
