MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Resuming flights between Russia and Egypt requires more bilateral contacts and efforts to improve airport and aircraft security, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Sputnik.

"We are working on it, there are constant intensive contacts between the Russian and the Egyptian sides, there is mutual understanding, we exchange visits regarding air travel issues, airport security, the safety of passengers and aircraft. This requires more contacts and efforts," Bogdanov said.

According to Bogdanov, the Russian side wants the air travel to resume "as soon as possible."

Flights between Russia and Egypt were suspended after a Russia-operated Airbus A321, en route from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, crashed on October 31, 2015, as a result of an explosion on board.

The two countries have been conducting a joint investigation into the crash, as well as cooperating on enhancing the security of Egyptian airports.
