UN: 'Silent' Period in Syria Shows Russia-US Progress on New Ceasefire
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United Nations is aiming for a 80-90-percent observance rate of  the ceasefire throughout Syria, the organization’s special envoy for the country, Staffan de Mistura, said Wednesday.

“Having a ceasefire, 50 percent today, used to be zero. We want to bring it up to 80 percent, of course 90 percent,” de Mistura said at a joint press conference with Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz in Vienna.

A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across conflict-torn Syria on February 27. Over 100 settlements have joined the ceasefire deal since it took effect, according to the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation.

On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the International Syria Support Group held a meeting, after which a statement was issued. The joint communique called for the Syrian ceasefire to be observed, progress toward a peaceful political transition and sustained humanitarian access to the areas in need.
