MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni, the meeting is expected to gather together top diplomats from the major regional countries, as well as from the "key international players."
The US Department of State reported that the event would be co-chaired by both the United States and Italy and the participants of the meeting would discuss the support to Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA), with a focus on security.
Libya has been in a state of turmoil for years after the Arab Spring protests in early 2011 led to a civil war and the overthrow of long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi. The instability has triggered the rise of numerous Islamic militant and terrorist groups.
Since 2014, there have been two governments in the country, General National Congress in the capital city of Tripoli, and Council of Deputies in the eastern town of Tobruk that won a parliamentary majority at the June 2014 elections and has been recognized by the international community. In December, Libya’s rival governments agreed to create the GNA and end the political impasse.
On March 31, the long-anticipated UN-backed GNA started to perform its duties in Libya. The government is headed by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.
