BEIJING (Sputnik) A Washington Post article published on Monday cited the Pentagon as claiming Russia and China are developing the capability to attack the United States from space.

"We have always maintained that space should be used for peaceful purposes. We are bitterly opposed to an arms race in outer space. We urge all countries, especially those with the same capacity, to refrain from doing so," Lu said during a press briefing.

The spokesman added that Russia and China, as well as other countries who share their view, took the initiative several years ago to make an agreement on preventing the militarization of outer space.

"We hope, more countries will join this agreement," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

In February, Frank Rose, the US assistant secretary of state for arms control, said he had concerns over the alleged continued development by Russia and China of anti-satellite weapons.
